Mission & History
Community Action Agencies (CAAs) were created by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 for the purpose of conducting, local anti-poverty programs throughout the United States. In 1976 CAAs recognized the need to have an organized and unified voice in the development, implementation and evaluation of State and Federal government policies and formed the California and Nevada Community Action Association (Cal/Neva CAA), now California/Nevada Community Action Partnership.
Cal/Neva is a non-profit organization comprised primarily of California and Nevada Community Action Agency Executive Directors and Board Representatives. Cal/Neva membership also includes single-purpose non-profit organizations working with the economically disadvantaged and private for-profit Companies supportive of Cal/Neva members and/or activities.
The primary purpose of Cal/Neva is to forge together public agencies, private organizations and corporate entities that provide or support programs and services for the economically disadvantaged. The Association's long range goal is to improve the financial health of the economically disadvantaged in California and Nevada.
One Cal/Neva approach to this goal is to work on enhancing each member agency's ability to deliver quality programs and services that are designed to help low-income individuals and families achieve self-reliance and attain financial self-sufficiency. Another approach is to work effectively at influencing legislation, regulations and public policies affecting the economically disadvantaged and the members ability to provide quality programs and services.
Cal/Neva's philosophy places strong and consistent emphasis on cooperation and mutual support among its members. By extension, this philosophy includes cooperation and mutual support with other entities working with or on issues affecting the economically disadvantaged of California and Nevada. Cal/Neva does not provide direct services to economically disadvantaged individuals or families.
